Twelve Things

I have been remiss in tutorial posting for a while. Therefore have some past projects:

1. Add lace or ribbon trim to suede boots or make new bootlaces from lace or ribbon.

2. Alter the way a dress hangs by hitching it up in places and securing with a few stitches. Add brooches or buttons to plain hats.

3. Create dramatic necklaces from many tiny beads. Make dustjackets from pretty paper. Cover the scratches on a vintage bag with acrylic paint and/or PVA glue.

4. Make a short skirt longer by adding fabric. Patchwork is a useful way to wear scraps of fabric too small for anything else.

5. Make your own paper patterns from newspaper by logically following how a garment is put together. This was one of the first patterns I made about six years ago now. The top half of the skirt is lined. My sewing machine at the time did not have a zipper foot so no zips for this skirt.

6. Make necklace pendants by gluing magazine pictures to sturdy cardboard or wooden pendants. Varnish with wood varnish or PVA glue.

7. Turn a broken watch face into a pendant with beads, wire, glue and other bits and pieces.

8. Found a gorgeous coat that is slightly too big? This one is 100% cashmere and was a Christmas present to one of my best friends last year. As a charity shop find it was too good to pass up so I cut 10cm from the bottom, rehemmed it with invisible hand stitches and turned the cut off fabric into a belt. Belt loops can be made from plaited embroidery thread in a matching colour.

9. The frill on this skirt is made from parts of an old scarf, handstitches around the hem.

10. Make straps for shoes from elastic and ribbon. These can also be attached at the ankle. To stop insoles disintegrating inside shoes or to make them look nicer, cover them with fabric.

11. Can't knit? Make your own loom using sturdy cardboard and attempt weaving a scarf.

12. Applique. The hearts were originally placed to hide nail varnish stains.
