Satchel Time

This vintage satchel is a birthday present to myself. For satchels on ebay it wasn't too expensive - £25 compared to the £50 I've seen some sell for. It's got a little spotting on the metal fittings but careful sanding and painting over with clear varnish has improved it. I plan to make a quilted cloth lining for the inside.

How to take care of your satchel:

1) Clean satchel with antibacterial wipes. Dust out the inside and any pockets.
2) Polish with clear shoe polish and use a cloth to clean off grime in the creases of the leather.
3) Sand away any rust spots using fine grain sandpaper. Slim nail files have the leverage to allow easy filing of buckles.
4) Wipe away file dust.
5) Paint over metal fittings with clear nail varnish (several coats) or bicycle paint to prevent future spotting.
6) Rub Vaseline into the leather and leave for several hours. Later use a cloth to wipe off excess. This will make the leather more supple and clean off any remaining dirt. I smeared more on areas with more creasing such as the end of the straps, as well as on the reverse side of the leather for these areas.
7) Give the satchel another polish or rub wax into the leather.
